Bob Crowley

Bob is a retired high school physics teacher from Portland, Maine. He graduated with a Forestry degree from the University of Maine and, in his 30’s, he returned to school to get his Master’s degree in Education. Aside from teaching, Bob has had a wide range of jobs spanning from being a forester, a lobsterman, a first mate on a research boat for the Smithsonian Institution in Canada, an entomologist for the USDA, as well as President, Vice President and Chief Negotiator for his local Teacher’s Union.

Bob spends his summers on a remote island off the Maine coast where he built a truly “green” summer cabin in the 1970s back when green was only referred to as the color. His “green” cabin was completely built with recycled material and requires a fraction of the energy of the average U.S. home. He’s built numerous structures from recycled material including wharfs, saunas, a chicken house and a hunting cabin.

In 2008, Bob Crowley went on the reality show Survivor: Gabon and 39 days later he was voted the oldest winner in the show’s history. He also won the ‘Sprint Survivor of the Season’ which is voted by the fans for their favorite player.

In 2009, Bob retired from teaching high school physics after teaching for 25 years and moved to a farm located outside of Portland, Maine with his wife Peggy and their adult children. The family owns and runs an eco-friendly business called Maine Forest Yurts on Runaround Pond in Durham Maine, which offers individuals, couples, families and corporate groups an eco-friendly, camping experience where guests can connect with nature in the Maine outdoors. The Crowleys also have a non-profit called the Durham Warriors Project which allows disabled veterans and other non-profits to stay for free at Maine Forest Yurts.

Bob’s other interests include journal writing, story-telling, photography, bone collecting, archeology and camping.
