Age-Positive Public Health Movement

Help Us Build an Age-Positive Public Health Movement in Maine!

The Maine Council on Aging and Maine Public Health Association are partnering to launch an age-positive public health movement in Maine to help ensure that longer lives are healthier lives. The movement will advance health and well-being in later life by recognizing aging as a lifelong process, addressing ageism as a determinant of health, and integrating age-positive approaches into public health policy and practice. We are just entering the planning phase of this work and would love your engagement and input.

Why It Matters

What We’re Building

Leadership & Partnerships
Convening leaders across public health, healthcare and community organizations around a shared vision of priorities and opportunities for age-positive public health across Maine.

Data for Action
Assessing existing data and gaps, identifying meaningful indicators, and exploring how data can better guide policy, planning and action.

Age-Positive Integration
Bringing an age-equity lens to public health initiatives already underway and strengthening connections between Maine’s public health and aging services networks.

Education and Shared Learning
Incorporating anti-ageism and age-positivity into new and existing public health learning opportunities to help leaders understand ageism as a determinant of health, healthy aging as a life-course issue, and the implications of greater longevity for public health practice.

Our work will be guided by the Trust for America’s Health Age-Friendly Public Health Systems 6Cs Framework.

Moving From Ideas to Action

An Age-Positive Public Health Steering Committee will help identify opportunities for public education and practice change, incorporate diverse perspectives, and inform activities, such as potential pilot projects.

A Data Working Group will examine what Maine needs to know about healthy aging, what data already exist, where gaps remain, and how information can be made more useful and actionable.

Together, this work will help establish a practical path for integrating age-positive principles into public health policy, practice, education, data, communications, and community engagement across Maine.
